How to Export Signal Messages from iPhone

Export Signal messages from your iPhone using screenshots and Textscape. The only reliable method for Signal's end-to-end encrypted chats.

· 4 min read

Signal’s end-to-end encryption makes it one of the most secure messaging apps available — but that same security means there’s no built-in way to export your conversations. The only reliable method is taking screenshots and converting them with a tool like Textscape.

Why Signal Doesn’t Have an Export Feature

Signal is designed with privacy as the core principle. Unlike WhatsApp or Telegram, Signal:

  • Stores messages only on your device (not on servers)
  • Uses end-to-end encryption that prevents any third-party access
  • Doesn’t offer cloud backups that could be intercepted
  • Intentionally omits export features to protect user privacy

This is great for security, but problematic when you legitimately need to save conversations for legal, business, or personal reasons.

How to Export Signal Messages with Textscape

Since Signal won’t export messages directly, the solution is to capture what’s on your screen. Textscape takes your Signal screenshots and converts them into clean, organized documents.

Step 1: Take Screenshots of Your Signal Conversation

  1. Open Signal and navigate to the conversation you need to export.
  2. Scroll to the beginning of the conversation (or the earliest message you need).
  3. Take a screenshot by pressing Side Button + Volume Up simultaneously.
  4. Scroll down, overlapping each screenshot by 1–2 messages to avoid gaps.
  5. Continue until you’ve captured the entire conversation.

Pro tip: For very long conversations, work in sections — capture a month or date range at a time to keep files manageable.

Step 2: Import Screenshots into Textscape

  1. Open Textscape on your iPhone.
  2. Tap New Export.
  3. Select all the Signal screenshots from your photo library.
  4. Textscape automatically detects the order and stitches them together.

Step 3: Choose Your Export Format

FormatBest for
PDFCourt submissions, legal documentation, printing
CSVSpreadsheet analysis, searching, filtering
Excel (.xlsx)Data analysis, sorting by date or sender
Plain Text (.txt)Simple archives, importing into other systems

Tap Export and your file is ready to share via email, AirDrop, or save to Files.

Tips for Exporting Signal Messages

  • Disable disappearing messages first. If the conversation has disappearing messages enabled, turn it off before taking screenshots — otherwise messages may vanish before you capture them.
  • Check for gaps. Textscape warns you if it detects time gaps between screenshots. If you see a warning, go back and capture the missing section.
  • Keep screen brightness high. Brighter screens produce clearer screenshots that are easier for Textscape to process.
  • Export voice notes separately. Textscape captures text messages; for voice notes, you’ll need to play and screen-record them.
  • Don’t edit screenshots. Cropping or annotating screenshots before import can confuse the processing. Use original screenshots only.

Common Use Cases

Signal messages are increasingly relevant in court cases — from family law disputes to business contract disagreements. Textscape’s PDF export format creates professional documents suitable for legal submissions.

Workplace documentation

HR departments and compliance teams often need records of work-related communications. Even if your company uses Signal for secure messaging, those conversations may need to be preserved for investigations or audits.

Personal archives

Preserving important conversations — whether sentimental messages from loved ones or critical business agreements — before switching phones, resetting your device, or closing an account.

Evidence in court cases

Text messages, including Signal conversations, are commonly used as evidence in court. Having properly formatted exports with clear timestamps strengthens your documentation.

What About Mac?

If you prefer working on a larger screen, Textscape has a native macOS app. Transfer your Signal screenshots via AirDrop or iCloud, then process them on your Mac for the same clean export options.
